Summer Sunday School Electives

June, July, August 2024

Summer quarter begins June 2, 2024

1. God’s Annual Cycle of Catechism for His Covenant People

The thread of God’s saving ways in the feasts of Israel is clear, beautiful, and powerful. As we trace that thread, we will see the flow of how He taught His ancient people. Calling, justification and sanctification leading to glorification, and rest for His faithful ones will be seen in Old Covenant context. Messiah Jesus, the Pascal Lamb and Redeemer, is key all the way through. Format: teaching, video excerpts, class discussion.

Teachers: Elder Lee Brooks, Rev. Keith Greer, and Clark Slothower

2. The Letters of St. John, Textual Exposition of I, II, and III John

Are you wobbly in your faith, unsure of what you’re supposed to believe? Do you have a life of certainty or a life of cobbled-together feelings and ideas about following Jesus? Do you battle the concern that your faith may only be a mental game of well wishing? This class will give textual exposition of I, II, and III John and provide 15 assurances from God for your confidence in living genuine Christianity.

Teacher: Rev. Frank Coho

3. Given for You: Reclaiming Calvin’s Doctrine of the Lord’s Supper

The purpose of this class is to consider the significance of the Lord’s Supper and why it is so important to the spiritual life of the church and individual believers. Reformed Churches have historically subscribed to John Calvin’s doctrine of the Lord’s Supper. But what were Calvin’s views on the Lord’s Supper and how do they differ from our own? These are some of the questions this class will attempt to answer. Our primary resource will be Keith Mathison’s book, Given For You: Reclaiming Calvin’s Doctrine of the Lord’s Supper.

Teacher: Rev. Matt Collins

Book: Given For You: Reclaiming Calvin’s Doctrine of the Lord’s Supper by Keith Mathison, available in class for $12

4. I Will Not Forget Your Word

Psalm 119 says, “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I may not sin against you.” Psalm 1 says, “…his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.” All of us have easy access to multiple translations of the Bible and can read God’s Word whenever we choose. However, if we are truly going to store up God’s Word in our hearts and meditate on it day and night, there is no substitute for the discipline of Scripture memorization. This is not just a class about Scripture memorization; over the course of the summer we will work together to memorize the book of Colossians.

Teacher: Elder Paul Rogers

5. Apologetics Class

Homebuilders                                                                                     All are welcome to attend.

“How can we talk about the good news of Jesus in a way that shows how good it really is?” This class is designed to strengthen our witness through principles of apologetics from Daniel Strange’s book, Making Faith Magnetic. Fleshing out five points of contact with non-believers, we will consider how to engage the lost who both know God and don’t know him at the same time (Romans 1:18-21).

Teachers: Rev. Steve Light and John Park

Book: Making Faith Magnetic by Daniel Strange, available in class for $14

6. The Discipline of Grace by Jerry Bridges

Young Adults                                                                                    All are welcome to attend.

Join us each week as we read through Jerry Bridges’ book, The Discipline of Grace. We’ll spend time learning how God works His sanctifying grace into our lives. We’ll also discuss how we can strive to draw nearer to Him each day despite the stress and busyness of our lives.

Teachers: Mr. Chase Reed & Various Others

Book: The Discipline of Grace by Jerry Bridges, available in class for $15
